Accepted.com refers to the process of writing the MBA goals essay as “mapping.” To “map” your MBA goals essay you need to follow our unique MAP strategy. There are two MAP tactics which will be explained below.
Make sure your essay responds to the exact wording to the question, but most MBA goals essays are like a roadmap. The adcoms want to see where you have been, where you are right now, and where you plan on going in the future – that is, the short term future and the long haul. Once you weave together your past, present, and future, your career roadmap will be complete. You will have shown the adcom that your head is on straight and that you have a clear, realistic idea of how an MBA will help you reach your final destination.
The second tactic of the MAP strategy is to incorporate the three key ingredients of an MBA goals essay: Motivation, Aspiration, and Perspiration. Let’s take a look at each one of these:
- Motivation – What or who has inspired you to do the things you’ve done or make the decisions you’ve made? What led you to choose your particular field? What has motivated you to apply to business school? Why have you chosen this particular top business school?
- Aspiration – What do you aspire to after your earn your MBA? Do you have a grand vision for the future? What would you like to have achieved in five years? Ten years? More?
- Perspiration – How have you showed persistence and perseverance in the past? When have you pushed yourself to pursue personal or career goals? The sweat equity you invested in realizing other dreams will persuade the reader that you have “dedication capital” to invest similarly in the future.
