Test Your MBA Reapplication IQ!

You didn’t get in, so you’re trying again now – good for you for putting yourself out there and working hard (again) to achieve your b-school dream!

Most MBA reapplicants worry about how the adcoms will view them as repeat applicants. Test your MBA reapplication knowledge by determining if the following statements are true or false:

1. True or False: If you were rejected once, then you’ll probably be rejected again.

False! Many applicants worry that applying a second (or third) time is a waste of time – once a reject, always a reject, right? WRONG! There are so many things you can do over the course of a year to improve your profile and b-school qualifications that it would be silly NOT to try again. B-schools will rarely hold your reapplication status against you.

2. True or False: Reapplying shows you’re serious and committed, so MBA admissions committees will definitely admit you.

False! Don’t be fooled into thinking that MBA reapplicants get an instant “in” as a reward for putting themselves through the application hoops again. In order to gain admission to a top business school as a reapplicant you’re going to need to prove that you’re a worthy candidate – regardless of how many times you’ve applied in the past.

3. True or False: You’re best off viewing your status as a reapplicant as being on neutral ground.

True! The reality of the situation lies somewhere between #1 and #2 above. Most schools won’t hold your prior ding against you, and some may even commend you on taking a second swing. But the most important factor – and this applies to b-schools across the board – is that you show growth and improvement in your application. How do you do this? Create a strong reapplication strategy after closely evaluating what went wrong in past applications.
